I hadn't thought about Jim in years, and my interest in R/C has reignited, so I rather randomly came across your memorial to him.

I met Jim back in the late 1970's as a grade-schooler who loved model airplanes. After the usual progression of smashing plastic Cox airplanes, then balsa control line planes, my friends and I worked up to R/C planes. The nearest place to learn to fly was with the Palomar R/C Flyers, and Jim was, if I recall correctly, president at the time.

My first flight with my first plane was a catastrophe. The wings folded mid-flight, and I was as crushed as the pieces of balsa that remained. But Jim was so understanding, patient, and kind. He gave me pointers for the next plane, and over the months and years to follow, he and others in the Club taught us to build and fly, and he was a great advocate for the sport.

I will miss him.
